Count Your Socks
As part of my goal to get to the point where I only wear handknit socks, I had Kaity make me a little button where I could keep track of how many pairs I have knit.
So far, I have five pair (pairs?, I can never decide) of handknit socks - Four I've made, and the pair Julia made me for the Sox Exchange. I also have two pairs of slippers, but I'm not counting them. As you can see.... I need to knit a lot more socks.
So, I figured I need an incentive, a push, a motivation... so here's my idea for anyone who wants to join in - I'd love it if sock-knitters all over blog land copied my button and kept their own sock tally going on their side bar. I would love to see the tallies. I want to be inspired by seeing how many socks are being knit. I'm sure there are some of you with LOTS of socks! I want numbers, baby, to keep me awed and inspired!
If you email me that you've put up a Sock Tally button, I'll record your starting number, whether you have one pair of socks when you join or 50, and at the end of 2006 I'll recheck everyone's numbers and see who has knit the most socks in a year... for a fabu prize, of course! (no cheating - this means PAIRS of socks - no singles!... 2, count 'em, 2 to a pair)
Or, if you don't want to go for the prize, just put the button up for fun, to keep track for yourself!
Ready, set.... KNIT SOCKS!!
(PS , fine print cra*..... Please download the button to your own server, yada, yada, yada)

Oh, fun. Off I go to count my socks!
Sounds fun Lynda! And mine is so easy. One. And I just finished the pair (my first pair!) this morning at about 1:00 am! I'm going to post pics on my blog and will add your button to my sidebar as well! Great idea!
Oh, and nice job on the button Kaity!
What a fun idea! I prolly won't join though, because I have exactly one (not one pair) of socks under my belt and my tally would stay at an embarrassly low number. How cool that kaity could make you a button!
ahaha! great idea! too bad i haven't made any socks for myself yet...
i guess there's no time like the present--especially now that i have the nancy bush vintage sock book and considering all the sock yarn and i've acquired / been gifted :)
i should make more friends with feet the same size as mine. i could knit tons of socks for myself, and then if something comes up, i could just give them a pair (unused, of course).
this is a great idea! especially since i'm always losing my socks. i'd have to take extra care with socks i made and i guess i'll be less likely to lose them. not to mention, 4 dogs in the house at once + handknit socks = disaster waiting to happen! they've laid claim to my store-bought workout socks :(
well, enough jibber jabber! have a great day!
It is my one goal of 2006 to learn to knit socks!! (and then maybe I can only wear handknit socks in 2007!)
Keohinani - It doesn't matter if you knit them for yourself, or give them away... just tally up a total of knit socks!
I think I'd like to join this...however, I will warn you I have not made socks yet. Actually I have started on my first ever pair yesterday and have a little bit of the cuff made. I am finding it a little awkward because I'm not used to using the 4 needles. I'm sure I will get used to it as time goes on though. So, I doubt that I would win any prizes because I'm so new to sock knitting...still, I'd like to join.
Shelley, definitely join - I'm not gonna win either! It'll just be fun to keep track!
Lynda, how do you set it so that it shows how many pairs of socks have been knitted? I have the sock button on my site, but I don't know how to get it to show how many pairs I have done...
Shelley - in your template, under the link for the button, you just need to type in a line with your own tally. I'm really bad at this stuff, Kaity does most of it for me... hopefully this helps?
Ok, I'll try that. Thanks!
Count me in, Lynda. 2006 feels like a socky year. Cute button too!
Great idea! I'll edit my template later today. My starting tally is, um, 39. Although some of them are getting older and worn - do I go backwards if I have to throw some out?
Cool! So, do I count socks I've knit for others? Or only the socks I actually knit for myself and keep? I, personally do not own a single pair of handknit socks...oh, wait, yes I do. One pair. The first pair I ever made. They are too big and too small. I got eager and made the toe too soon, but they are far too wide...they are unwearable. Do they count? :o) Will be placing a button on my blog once I am home--am currently at work.
Kirsten - count em all! Give me a starting count, and we'll see how many you add to it this year!
Excellent....(now, someone poke Kaity and ask her to fix me up some buttony goodness??)
Count me at 2.25 currently. Or 2, if you want to omit the fractions...
What a neat idea Lynda! And it makes you popular. heh.
I'm teetering on a decision. Do I join, do I not join....I don't know. I have a phobia against buttons, but I like your cute little gang you're starting.
Do I? Don't I? Do I?
Will I? Won't I?
Hmm, my weirdness lately may need medication. Sorry I'm displaying it here on your blog.
I have 7 pair of socks I've knitted for myself (perhaps a couple of pair more, but for the sake of argument I'll claim the 7 pair I have in my drawer) If I include gift socks over the years then I've knit about 20 pairs.
I've not figured out how to put buttons on my blog. I'll have to ask the husband how to do it, I'm not very computer saavy....or blog saavy!
Thanks for the comment on girlchild's dress, she does love it and wants me to knit her another one!
Cheri - I'll add you to the group!
Wendy - count 'em all, we'll use that as a starting number and see what you add to it over the year!
I'll join too!
Join!...me too!
I'm IN! I've got loads of sock yarn waiting to be knit up!
Last year I made 4 pairs (one for me, three for gifts). So that's where I'm starting.
I've got one pair on the needles now and two more raring to go!
I'm in! I've just posted the button and my tally on the old blog. Only one pair to date.
Well, my numbers will not put you in awe, but I love this idea. You are a woman after my own heart - I too love socks and lace. Haven't done much of either, but I love them both.
Okay, count me in :o)
I have 3 pair finished so far and am working on my first pair of jaywalkers as I type!
I've always thought this, but never thought to actually count them on my blog. That's a good idea, so count me in.
Count me in too. I am really new at socks. I do not have an official count yet but I am working on mys first pair of crochet socks right now.
Found you at tabbytuxedo's site.

Can I play too? It sounds inspirational! I have 3 completed pairs.
is it too late to sign up? i'd love to join in!
Awesome idea. Can I play too??? I'm only at 3 right now but as I LOVE LOVE LOVE knitting socks, I know this number will climb in 2006!!! Your button will be on my blog this week!!
Oh! Count me in, too! I've made 12 pair since I learned to do them in June! Great idea! I just got a new sock pattern book and can't wait to do some more.
I wanna count too....
Let's start at 1!
The second is about half way through...took a little break for the surgery - lol.
Now to figure out where I left off in the pattern. Ugh
OK, this is a brilliant idea!
*Off to email*
Lynette- it's definitely not too late to join! Happy to have you. Please post another comment or send me an email with your blog name and I'll add you.
Oooh! I want to play! I knit 2 pair last year and 1 already this year (started and completed in '06). I've already begun pair #4 for me - a lacy pair!
=)
Please add me to the count! I knit 6 pair last year. This year, I have two under my belt so far and another pair on the needles!
Hey, neat! I think I've got three pair right now-I have others but they need darning before I can count them...
I hope I can manage the button thing-this computer stuff isn't like knitting socks, you know.
Hey nice button, I've been searching for one for socks, and it's perfect!!
Mica
I'd like to play too! I learned to knit socks last year, and have made 4 pair. This year I'd like to add a few more - a fun way of keeping track!
Sounds like fun. I just made my very first sock!!! Came out cute. Now I have to make the other one. I hope it comes out the same size!!!! Will be adding your blog and button to my blog...

This is awesome. I've been trying to get to the point where I wear only hand knit socks as well. At the beginning of 2006 I had 4 pair and have knit another 3 so far this year. Thank you for sponsoring this!
Ooops. Forgot about the jaywalkers and whitbys. I have knit 5 so far this year for a total of 9 in my sock drawer.

Hope it's okay to join late! I just put together a list of the socks I've knit for everyone in the family so far and added it to the sidebar of my blog. Now I suppose I'd better knit a pair for my daughter before she realizes that her brothers all have multiple pairs...
Hi Lynda,
I would love to join. I knit 4 pairs in 2005, and 1 pair in 2006. Currently working on my second pair! The button is adorable, thanks!
Oh can I join too? I started this year knitting socks and I can't seem to stop!!
i'm knitting along! it was my new years resolution to learn to knit socks and i've got...4 1/2 so far this year, soon to be five!
Sign me up, please! I love the Count Your Socks button! It was a challange to remember how many socks I've knitted, but here it is...this year 8 socks for a total of 17 since the beginning...
Hi Lynda,
I came across your site while looking at another blog. What beautiful work you have done and only a first time knitter! I am impressed! I have knit over the years, starting mostly when my kids were little (they are now 21 & 25). I hadn't done any knitting for about 15 years when I met some nice ladies at our local coffee shop who meet Wed. evenings & knit socks. I was amazed by their "self-patterned" wool socks. They invited me to join their group & patiently taught me to knit socks. It only took me about 8 mths to finish the first pair!! I am now almost finished my 2nd pair, fishing socks for my hubby. I can't decide which colour to start next!! Decisions, decisions!!
Happy knitting!!
Kathy, Surrey, B.C.
Add me to your list, please! I've loved this idea since you started it, but only now have added your button to my site! Thanks!
I thought I left a comment here when I put the button on my blog (ages ago) but I guess I didn't.
Anyway, I'm in and I've knit quite a few pairs this year. :)
